After Danish footballer Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during the Euro 2020 Denmark V Finland game, the Resuscitation Council urges people to learn how to perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). They report that every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%.

The guidance from the Resuscitation Council on giving CPR during the COVID-19 outbreak has also been revised. People are encouraged to avoid placing their face close to the casualty’s to feel for breathing on their cheek and visually check for a rise and fall of the casualty’s chest for normal breathing instead.

If you have employees returning to the workplace soon, why not encourage first aiders to polish up on their skills using online resources, including ‘CPR Right Now’ for specific guidance COVID-19 guidance and ‘Lifesaver Learning’ for interactive training on CPR and using defibrillators.

St John Ambulance’s e-learning platform has a range of free online modules, including using a defibrillator, treating a heart attack, eye injuries, burns and scalds and mental wellbeing first aid.

If you have defibrillators at work that haven’t been checked for some time, make sure you inspect them as soon as possible to check they are ready to use. St John Ambulance has online resources explaining the maintenance and regular checks you should undertake.
