Effective investigation and reporting of accidents and near misses gives invaluable information to help businesses improve their health and safety procedures, and rectify the cause to ensure that the problem does not occur again.
This one-day course provides the practical skills required by anyone who is involved in accident or incident investigation at work. It is based on a number of real accidents and includes a practical exercise to allow the participants to practise the investigation skills taught on the course.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for anyone who is or may be involved in accident or near miss (incident) reporting and investigation at work, including Facilities Managers and health and safety staff.
What skills and information will they learn?
After successfully completing this course, participants will:
- Understand what accidents and incidents are (including near misses) and how they are caused
- Understand the reasons for reporting and investigating accidents and incidents
- Be able to carry out an accident investigation at work and recommend improvements to prevent it happening again
- Understand the main legal requirements, including the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR).

- Deciding which accidents should be investigated
- Investigation techniques, including evidence gathering (observation, examining, documents and interviewing) and report writing
- Practical accident investigation exercise, based on real accident scenario
- Identification of actions required to prevent recurrence
Course information and how to book
This one day course is offered in-house and can be customised to include your own internal accident reporting procedures. The course costs £1,500 + VAT for up to 16 participants, a cost of £94 + VAT per head for a full course. Customisation starts from £350 per course.
