During this free evening event you’ll hear from speakers including national charity and event co-host, the Alzheimer’s Society, tech disruptor Alcove, visually-impaired musician Andre Louis, and System Concepts.

Each will offer their perspectives on real world UX projects, shedding light on how we can put inclusivity at the core of technology, products and services.

Welcome and introductions

Mickela Perera (System Concepts)
Mickela is a Principal UX Consultant at System Concepts, and is commited to making websites, systems and applications usable and accessible to all. Her wide ranging consultancy work includes conducting research across wide-ranging user groups and platforms, utilising multiple techniques.

Talk 1: Dementia UX and user research

Imogen Levy and Rik Williams (Alzheimer’s Society) with Swetha Sethu-Jones (System Concepts)

Hear about Alzheimer’s Society’s vision for inclusion, and the charity’s knowledge of Dementia UX, including the scale and impact of the condition in the UK. System Concepts is currently undertaking a diverse user research project for the charity. We will talk briefly about key aspects of this work, offer our UX insights and recruitment tips, and show how collaborating with stakeholders helps maximise the power of research.

Speaker bio: Imogen Levy, Alzheimer’s Society
As Head of Digital at Alzheimer’s Society, Imogen brings extensive experience working on large-scale digital projects. She draws on a range of disciplines, including UX, IA and user-centred design, and is also proficient in multiple coding languages.

Speaker bio: Rik Williams, Alzheimer’s Society
Rik is a UX Architect and Content Strategist, with a focus on understanding users’ and stakeholders’ needs. He combines user experience design and content strategy skills, with people, prioritisation and planning expertise.

Speaker bio: Swetha Sethu-Jones, System Concepts
Swetha is a Principal UX Consultant at System Concepts, with experience of a wide range of UX projects spanning mobile, web and connected TV platforms. She enjoys employing a variety of methodologies to further understanding of how people use technology, and how it meets their needs.

Talk 2: Insights into accessibility: a conversation with musician Andre Louis

Andre will discuss his experiences of accessibility technologies, demonstrating settings and features that you can access on your own phone. Q&A will be integrated throughout this interesting, informal, hands-on talk.

Speaker bio: Andre Louis
A musician, Andre is fascinated with new and emerging tech. He advocates the use of off-the-shelf products wherever possible, rather than bespoke items for the visually-impaired. Andre was the first visually impaired person in the world to own the groundbreaking Komplete Kontrol software from Native Instruments.

Talk 3: How tech can enable inclusion and independent living

Hellen Bowey (Alcove)

Alcove co-founder Hellen Bowey will talk about her mission to drive a long-term care revolution. She’ll speak about the role of IoT technology in enabling inclusion, drawing on specific examples such as Alexa. Along the way, you’ll hear about the value of aggregating wide ranging devices like home sensors, smart wearables, home automation systems and many others, creating personalised packages of assistive technology for people who – given the right support tools – can continue living independently.

Speaker bio: Hellen Bowey
Hellen Bowey is the CEO and co-founder of Alcove, a company she started in 2014 to disrupt the UK care industry. A pioneer of independent living for older and disabled adults, Hellen’s career has included commercialising local government service delivery, and working with children’s centres and outreach care services.
