Ergonomics training keeps Amgen in good shape

When the UK subsidiary of global biotechnology company Amgen was looking to implement practical office ergonomics and manual handling training for its 300 employees, System Concepts was called in to deliver a series of customised courses and now provides an ongoing service.

A management consultancy specialising in human factors and ergonomics, System Concepts has a strong track record in helping optimise productivity, usability and safety in industry and commerce and has undertaken consultancy and training assignments for many national and international organisations.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) user training and workstation assessments were a priority at Amgen to ensure the safety and comfort of staff when using this equipment.  The original Display Screen Equipment Regulations were brought into UK legislation in 1993 to identify possible risks to users and help prevent potential visual, back and upper limb discomfort caused by the incorrect use of DSE in the workplace.

One of System Concepts’ first tasks at Amgen was to conduct an audit of the use of display screen equipment within the company, and of each workstation, to identify any potential risks and then to make recommendations to improve employees’ comfort at work.  Specific areas considered at each workstation were the height and position of the chair in relation to the keyboard, the height of the screen, the location of the keyboard and mouse and the amount of legroom available.  Practical advice was also given on how to avoid visual discomfort.

Regular DSE user training sessions were introduced, tailored to meet the needs of Amgen, to ensure that good ergonomic principles were maintained and that new employees also adopted safe working practices.

The second key area of activity for System Concepts was the provision of manual handling training.  In the UK, manual handling accounts for approximately 30% of injuries in the workplace.  Lifting and stacking are some of the main activities for concern and at Amgen it was the IT department, where employees often need to move heavy computer equipment and monitors, which was identified as a priority area for training, although a manual handling audit was carried out across the company to highlight other potential ergonomics problems or activities with the potential to cause an injury.

Following this wide-ranging assessment System Concepts devised a tailored training programme to reduce any risk factors.  The course provides important background information on the causes of back injuries as well as allowing participants to practice the kinetic handling techniques under the direct supervision of the trainer.

Tom Stewart, managing director of System Concepts explained “The use of ergonomic principles in the working environment increases productivity by providing a safe and comfortable workplace, which in turn will help to reduce sickness and absenteeism rates.  Amgen has adopted a pro-active approach to occupational health and safety which recognises the key role played by ergonomics.  The company’s ongoing commitment not only ensures that it complies with current UK health and safety legislation, it provides a good environment for its workforce which will bring long term rewards.”

Paul Danes of Amgen commented “We have been impressed by the high standards and professional approach demonstrated by System Concepts.  Our employee feedback forms consistently show high ratings for their training courses and they deliver excellent value for the company.  Through our ongoing partnership we are confident of safeguarding sound health and safety procedures for our employees.”
