Ergonomics Training Keeps AMGEN in Good Health

We provided workstation assessments and customised ergonomics training to the 300 employees of the UK subsidiary of global biotechnology company Amgen.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments

Correct use of laptop at a deskDisplay Screen Equipment (DSE) user training and workstation assessments were a priority at Amgen to ensure the safety and comfort of staff and meet their legal obligations.  The Display Screen Equipment Regulations required employers to identify possible risks to users and help prevent potential visual, back and upper limb discomfort caused by its incorrect use.

First we audited the use of display screen equipment and workstations in the company, to identify any potential risks and made recommendations to improve employees’ comfort at work.  Specific areas considered at each workstation were:

  • the height and position of the chair in relation to the keyboard
  • the height of the screen
  • the location of the keyboard and mouse
  • the amount of legroom available.

Practical advice was also given on how to avoid visual discomfort.

Regular DSE user training sessions were introduced, tailored to meet the needs of Amgen, to ensure that good ergonomic principles were maintained and that new employees also adopted safe working practices.

Manual handling training

In the UK, manual handling accounts for approximately 30% of injuries in the workplace.  Following a company wide assessment the IT department, where employees often need to move heavy computer equipment and monitors, was identified as a priority area for training.

We devised a tailored training programme to teach good manual handling techniques and reduce risk.  The course provides important background information on the causes of back injuries as well as allowing participants to practice the kinetic handling techniques under the direct supervision of the trainer.

Tom Stewart from System Concepts explained “The use of ergonomic principles in the working environment increases productivity by providing a safe and comfortable workplace, which in turn will help to reduce sickness and absenteeism rates.  Amgen has adopted a pro-active approach to occupational health and safety which recognises the key role played by ergonomics.  The company’s ongoing commitment not only ensures that it complies with current UK health and safety legislation, it provides a good environment for its workforce which will bring long term rewards.”

Paul Danes of Amgen commented
