When the UK subsidiary of global biotechnology company Amgen was looking to implement practical office ergonomics and manual handling training for its 300 employees, System Concepts was called in to deliver a series of customised courses and now provides an ongoing service.
Display
Screen Equipment (DSE) user training and workstation assessments were a priority
at Amgen to ensure the safety and comfort of staff when using this equipment.
The original Display Screen Equipment Regulations were brought into UK
legislation in 1993 to identify possible risks to users and help prevent
potential visual, back and upper limb discomfort caused by the incorrect use of
DSE in the workplace.
We first audited the use of display screen equipment within the company, and of each workstation, to identify any potential risks and made recommendations to improve employees’ comfort at work. Specific areas considered at each workstation were:
Practical advice was also given on how to avoid visual discomfort.
Regular DSE user training sessions were introduced, tailored to meet the needs of Amgen, to ensure that good ergonomic principles were maintained and that new employees also adopted safe working practices.
In the UK, manual handling accounts for approximately 30% of injuries in the workplace. Following a company wide assessment the IT department, where employees often need to move heavy computer equipment and monitors, was identified as a priority area for training.
We devised a tailored training programme to teach good manual handling techniques and reduce risk. The course provides important background information on the causes of back injuries as well as allowing participants to practice the kinetic handling techniques under the direct supervision of the trainer.
Tom Stewart, managing director of System Concepts explained “The use of ergonomic principles in the working environment increases productivity by providing a safe and comfortable workplace, which in turn will help to reduce sickness and absenteeism rates. Amgen has adopted a pro-active approach to occupational health and safety which recognises the key role played by ergonomics. The company’s ongoing commitment not only ensures that it complies with current UK health and safety legislation, it provides a good environment for its workforce which will bring long term rewards.”
Paul Danes of Amgen commented

Whilst I've always been keen to get a 'tick in the box' with regards ergonomics, I believe that System Concepts have added value throughout the project lifecycle.
