The Cost of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Research from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has recently found that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) cost UK companies £300 million a year in sick pay and lost productivity.
Around 213,000 people were affected by repetitive strain related injuries last year. The Society, which represents 48,000 physiotherapists, claims that neither the Government nor industry is doing enough to tackle the problem, and that few employers offer staff access to occupational health services.
CSP spokeswoman Pauline Cole said: "There is a clear opportunity for employers to do more to provide occupational health services, both with regard to prevention of RSI and rehabilitation”.
The CSP is calling on the Government to combine legislation with incentives and good practice guidance to encourage employers to take preventative action and more effective interventions.
Early interventions such as carrying out workstation assessments, identifying the right equipment and making sure that employees are appropriately informed and trained can help to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. They also help reduce the risks of injuries getting so bad that people have to stop work altogether.
