Our Tips for Strong Health and Safety Leadership
Strong leadership is the first goal of the Health and Safety Executive’s strategy launched earlier this year. Here are nine actions you can take straight away to improve health and safety leadership in your business.
- Recognise the legal and moral duty for those who create the risk to manage it effectively.
- Clearly demonstrate your own personal commitment to creating the right safety culture
- Get out there and talk to staff, visit workplaces, take personal responsibility for addressing any concerns raised
- Make sure your health and safety processes are practical, usable and useful
- Appraise everyone formally on their health and safety commitment
- Build confidence and competence through training, practice and praise
- Make sure your actions are consistent with the instructions given to everyone else
- Visibly care about your people. If one of your staff is injured in the workplace or experiences work-related ill-health, such as stress, talk to the employee and his or her family and colleagues.
- Do all these things regularly, not as a one-time event, to continuously reinforce the importance of health and safety leadership in your role.
