Chestnuts Roasting on the Open Fire …
The nights are drawing in, the children are getting excited and the weather turns chilly, almost promising a white Christmas. Add to that the endless parties, presents and holidays and it really is the most wonderful time of the year!
Yet, this is one of the busiest times for the Fire and Rescue Services. Typical decorations provide the ideal opportunity for fires to start by increasing the fuels available (such as trees, decorations, wrapping paper and cards) and bringing them in close proximity to sources of ignition, such as lights, candles or indeed open fires.
As this is the season for giving, here is some practical advice to help maintain the festive mood and reduce the chance of fire happening in the office or home:
- Any electrical decorations should conform to the appropriate British Standard, be fitted with correctly rated fuses and be electrically tested unless new.
- Avoid overloading electrical sockets and leaving Christmas lights on unattended for long periods.
- Cables should not trail across floors where they can be easily damaged or cause trip hazards.
- Natural Christmas trees are highly combustible, particularly as they dry out. They should be kept in a tree stand filled with water and adequately separated from any heat source. Where possible choose a flame retardant alternative.
- Decorations should preferably be non-flammable or flame-retardant treated, otherwise they should be kept clear of light bulbs and other sources of heat.
- Wrapping paper and packaging should not be allowed to accumulate and should be properly disposed of at regular intervals.
- Decorations and trees should not obstruct fire exits, emergency lights, sprinklers or fire extinguishers.
And finally, spare a thought for your beleaguered fire safety manager trying to juggle keeping you safe and joining in the festive spirit!
With a little practical planning and thought we can prevent fires, enjoy the Christmas season and do our bit to help our fire fighters enjoy the festivities a little more than usual.
