The Brewers' Society - Manual handling in breweries and pubs
We conducted an extensive investigation of manual handling risks in the UK brewing industry for the industry group, The Brewers' Society. We visited several breweries and retail outlets (pubs) to observe various tasks involving manual handling. Our report outlined the various risk factors inherent in the industry and recommended actions to increase the manual handling safety, particularly in delivery to retail outlets.
This research formed the basis for industry wide guidelines for employers in the brewing industry. Following publication of the report we performed a series of ergonomics training courses, including Assessing DSE and Using Display Screen Equipment, for a large national brewer. We also performed a series of one-day courses especially for staff from the smaller breweries. This training focused on manual handling risks and performing assessments under the UK Manual Handling Operations Regulations.
