Biography

Kim is a senior consultant with System Concepts.  She holds a BSc Honours degree in Cognitive Science from Queen’s University in Canada, and an MSc in Human Computer Interaction with Ergonomics from University College London.  She is a member of the Ergonomics Society and a member of the British Human-Computer Interaction group.

Prior to joining System Concepts, Kim worked for five years at the IBM Toronto Software Lab, specialising in user interface design and development.  Here, she gained practical experience in all aspects of the product design, development, and evaluation cycles, and also took part in a multi-disciplinary design team that included visual designers, usability specialists, and software developers.  Her work has included user interface design, prototyping, development, expert evaluations, internationalisation and accessibility testing, and contributing to in-house design guidelines.

Client Projects / Case Studies

  • Conducting user research, evaluating conceptual designs, and developing wireframes for a new electronic data-entry system to be used by UK police forces
  • Gathering the customer and user requirements for a new banking application being planned for a major UK bank, and creating wireframe designs for the end-to-end business process
  • Facilitating and reporting on a competitive evaluation workshop with experts in mobile phone design for the European market
  • Gathering feedback from users trialling a new mobile phone, through questionnaires and interviews
  • Guiding a review of tone-of-voice and wording used on a new mobile phone targeted towards young social users
  • Early-stage reviews of content for a mobile phone user guide as new chapters and material were produced
  • Researching the interactions between security and usability, and reviewing the usability of new chip and PIN solutions for personal and home use
  • Observing and interviewing users of a complex workflow system used in the public sector
  • Completing accessibility audits for large companies in the UK and US 
  • Conceptual design, prototyping, and development of product welcome screens for helping users get started with a new version of a large enterprise software product  
  • A collaborative expert evaluation of Enterprise Service messaging products with software developers and user-centred designers, and presentation of the resulting recommendations to internal stakeholders and executives
  • Evaluations of product documentation, tutorials, and user guides for readability, comprehensibility, and usability  
  • Contributioning to in-house design guidelines for a large software organisation
